Top motorsport event the Circuit of Ireland is back significantly enhanced for 2014 with the announcement today that the iconic rally is one of 12 set to feature in next year’s revamped FIA European Rally Championship calendar.

Scheduled to take place during its traditional Easter Week-end slot on 18-19 April, the Circuit of Ireland Rally is being billed as one of the 2014 Championship’s ‘flagship events’. Subject to final approval by the FIA, motorsport’s world governing body, it makes its return to the ERC roster after a lengthy absence.

The Circuit of Ireland will be the only UK and Ireland based round in the Championship. Route details will be outlined early next year but it’s anticipated that the action packed two-day rally will include some of Northern Ireland’s top tourism landmarks in counties Down and Antrim as well as locations in Belfast.

Broadcast by Eurosport, the 2014 Circuit of Ireland Rally is expected to attract in excess of 10 million viewers globally as well as thousands of spectators and team officials who will accompany the international competitors.

Circuit of Ireland event director Bobby Willis said he was thrilled that the locally organised rally will be back in business and at the premium end of the international rally arena for 2014:

“The management team as well as our 700 plus volunteers are extremely proud and excited to be part of a new look ERC programme. The world’s second oldest rally the Circuit of Ireland Rally has always attracted high profile competitors and our inclusion in the 2014 ERC programme will help draw some of the best in the sport to Northern Ireland.

Alongside other home grown sporting events, as well as the Giro d’Italia, the Circuit of Ireland is set to be an important economic driver for Northern Ireland in 2014. Indeed, it’s estimated that the event will generate well over £1m for the local economy as well as attracting many first time visitors to the region.”

Enterprise, Trade and Investment Minister Arlene Foster said: “It is a wonderful coup for the ‘Circuit of Ireland 2014’ to be selected as a leg of the 2014 European Rally Championship.

“There is huge interest in this new series and the event will help raise the profile of Northern Ireland to TV audiences across Europe. Tourism Ireland will also be pulling out all the stops to capitalise on the opportunities that the rally will create.

“Through a well established working relationship with Eurosport, Tourism Ireland has ensured several stages of the event can be seen across Europe by Eurosport’s 125 million subscribers. As well as being able to watch high profile drivers battling it out, viewers will see the spectacular landscapes and beautiful scenery that Northern Ireland has to offer.”

As an integral part of the European Rally Championship the 2014 Circuit of Ireland expects to sign up a who’s who of international drivers and co-drivers. Top competitors being linked to ERC campaigns include Bryan Bouffier from France, Sepp Wiegand from Germany, Andreas Aigner from Austria as well as Waterford driver Craig Breen and Robert Barrable from Swords. Local drivers also likely to participate include Fermanagh based Alastair Fisher and former British Junior Rally Champion Marty McCormack from Draperstown.

Carryduff’s Barry Greer grew up with a family immersed in the world of motorsport. His father, Davy Greer, is still a regular face on the rally scene and runs DGM Sport, a successful rally hire and preparation business.

Being surrounded by rallying from such a young age, it was no surprise that both Barry and his brother Jonny also picked up their father’s passion for motorsport. This week, we grabbed 30 seconds with Barry to find out a little bit more about his passion…

Q. When did you first get behind a wheel?
A. “I got a Subaru Justy or Vivo I think it was called from the local auctions when I was about 12 or 13. It was great fun!”

Q. Who were your motorsport heroes as a child?
A. “Has to be Michael Schumacher – I was more into F1 than rallying when I was younger, but as the rallying bug grew, it had to be (Colin) McRae.”

Q. What is your favourite rally car?
A. “Ford Sierra Cosworth.”

Q. What was your first competitive event?
A. “I started karting when I was about 10 years old. My first rally was at Bishopscourt in 2005 with a 1400 Group N Polo.”

Q. What is your worst memory in rallying?
A. “Borrowing Shaun Gallagher’s Evo in Norway and rolling it on the ice. The gearbox then disintegrated on the way back to the hotel. There’s nothing worse than damaging something that doesn’t belong to you.”

When Sam Moffett and co-driver James O’Reilly brought their McKinstry hired S14 specification Subaru Impreza WRC over the finish ramp as winners of the Hillgrove Hotel Monaghan Stages Rally on Sunday, it was the climax of what had been a very fraught 48 hours for the crew…

The fraught journey to contest the Monaghan Stages Rally started one week earlier when the crew crossed the finish line of the Willie Loughman Memorial Rally in sixth position. They achieved the result in Moffett’s own Mitsubishi Lancer, and with the forestry rally safely completed, they planned to take the same car to last weekend’s tarmac event.

The local crew had scored a hat-trick of production category wins in Monaghan since 2010 and were going to be in the hunt for their fourth success this year, but as it transpired, another Group N success was out of the question…

After a huge effort during the week by chief mechanic Gerry McGarrity, who converted the car from gravel specification to tarmac specification, a late Friday evening test session saw the Mitsubishi’s engine cry ‘enough’. Suddenly, it seemed as though their rally was over before it had even started.

“It was about 6pm when it happened,” Moffett told The Sun. “A piston cracked and there was pretty much nothing that could be done in time for the rally.”

There were frantic efforts behind the scenes which resulted in a late night call to the Banbridge based McKinstry Motorsport stable, and a last minute deal was struck to hire an S14 specification Subaru Impreza WRC.

“It must have been around 9 or 10pm when Gerry (McGarrity) called Kenny,” Moffett said. “It was a long shot at that stage but it turned out the car was more or less ready to go.”

“On Saturday, we finished our recce of the stages at around 3pm. Then we did a short test in the car. It was my first time in a World Rally Car but I was very impressed by the handling and the power.”

“I thought that whatever the Evo could take flat out, this car could take flat out,” he added.

Safely settled into the car, Sam had suddenly transformed from a Group N contender into a hot favourite for the outright rally victory. When the rally started on Sunday, he bedded himself in with fourth fastest time.

From there, he gradually climbed the order, eventually moving to the top of the leaderboard after stage five. The local crew stayed there until the finish, going on to claim what was a popular rally victory.

“We had a few moments during the event,” Moffett said afterwards. “We dented the back door and hit the same hedge that Daniel McKenna hit hard right after me. But it is a great car, it handles very well. Even at the end of the day we still weren’t using the brakes to their full potential. Hopefully you might see me out in the car again some time!”

In the end, Moffett’s winning margin was one minute over the Impreza WRC belonging to Niall Maguire and Enda Sherry, with Daragh O’Riordan and Tony McDaid taking their Fiesta WRC to third overall.

Darren Gass and Enda Sherry head an impressive entry for this year’s Triton Showers Easter Stages Rally, round two of the Irish Tarmac Championship and round three of the Carryduff Forklift MSA Northern Ireland Rally Championship.

They will be joined by the likes of Derek McGarrity, Declan Boyle, Garry Jennings, Kenny McKinstry, Donagh Kelly and Kevin Barrett, as well as a host of leading Group N and two-wheel-drive crews.

The event takes place on Saturday 30 March and will be based at the Millbrook Lodge Hotel, Ballynahinch.
